I agree.
More years ago than I am prepared to say I worked with BeO and Be.
Health Physics would routinely check my urine for evidence of the
materials.
Then I realised I hadn't been summoned for my routine check so I phoned
them up and they said they didn't bother looking for it in urine anymore
as they had calculated death would occur before detection.

BE CAREFUL! BeO is a carcinogen! We have one product which uses BeO and
we have strict instructions for our technicians not to scrape it or do
any rework on it. When rework on the BeO is required, we send it to an
outside lab to handle. Unfortunately I am not aware what precautions are
used to mitigate the health risks associated with this material.

Subject: [TN] Micro-Sectioning Beryllia (BeO)

Fellow Technetters,

I'm looking for advice / partner lab. in connection with setting up a
line in our lab to handle micro-section preparation of beryllia (BeO).
Does anyone have experience of handling requirements and or line set-up?
After some initial research our lab manager it looks like we need to
house a saw and grind / polish station in a filtered fume hood (glove
box even?). Key requirement being the capture and safe disposal of any
aerosol / particulates generated through the micro-section preparation
process.

Would really appreciate any feedback or contacts and chance to discuss.

Thanks and kind regards,

Stewart
