Steve,

Not part of your original question, but there are many times when I find a
more directional light source to be of benefit than the diffused light
provided by a ring light. Having the option to use either a ring light, or
directed fiber bundle/s with focusing lens is sometimes quite handy for
scope work, so I would not toss out your halogen illuminators altogether.

I've always tried to teach people to turn down the intensity of the halogen
source to minimum when not in use for a short period of time [minimizing
filament current], but not shutting it off. The cooling fans of the halogen
lamp housings add extra noise [extra advantage of LED ring light approach],
but the lamps do seem to last much longer when operated in this manner.

We've used programmable LED illuminators on wire bonders for quite some
time. Sometimes even having the option to select from different color LED's
and illumination patterns. Sometimes a big asset to the pattern recognition
systems on problematic die.

I would definitely try a few of the LED ring lights and get some feedback
from the users!
