Hi Steve,
We've had limited experience with the LED light rings but they do appear to work well in all the applications we've used them in. They are light years ahead in comparison with the 8, 10 or 12W fluorescent light sources that normally come with a scope (read: the give away light sources). And they work very well in comparison to the halogen F/O light sources (read high $$ sources) that we've all become used to.

My suggestion would be to get the highest LED count you can on the ring. I have seen both 64 ($129) and 144 ($160) count LED rings and I suspect, as always, the more light the better. They are dirt cheap in comparison with the halogen sources (about 1/3 of the cost, as you probably already know), so your equipment budget will definitely stretch farther using these light sources. I would not hesitate to buy 1 or 2 of these (maybe one of each LED population) and see what they do side-by-side with a halogen source. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Subject: [TN] LED Microscope Ring Illuminators

Hi All,

Do any of you use LED microscope ring illuminators? Good or bad?

I know it's a cooler temperature light than halogen illuminators, but I like what they claim life of the LED's are, 50,000 hours vs. 1,000 hours for a halogen lamp.

I've never had the chance to use one, and I'd be interested in what you think of them.

Thanks,

Steve
