May be he is old enough never see the fine pitch, PoP, split ground MCM, etc. in his life(I mean work life)? May be he is belong to "Mr. Smith goes to Washington" movie age? That would put him on different planet. Anyone know how old is he? (Hopefully, not one of MIT computer generated technical paper, that would be the other possibility).

Subject: Re: [TN] "The Curse of IPC-A-610 and IPC-J-STD-001" - opinion piece by James Smith

Thanks, Steve.

This man, is obviously well oriented in science, no doubt. His article shows
he got experience from decades of work in the electronics industry. He is
absolutely right when he says that assembly should be done failfree just
from the beginning. Correct. A 10 year old kid can admit that. But then he
writes ' Perfect soldering, whether by hand or machine, is not difficult' .
With other words, the man has never installed a new p-p or had a shipment of
one million bad ICs from the East, never had contaminations on the boards
from a less reliable supplier, never been told to reduce cost by 25 %, never
had to continue production after a fire, never got
millions of tantalum caps with red phosphorous....the list could stretch
around the moon.

Who has not been dreaming of ' doing all right from the beginning' ! But the
reality is against such perfection. Daily life consists of so many
variables, known an unknown, that you can never promise 100% failfree
production the whole day. I've been at Ericsson for a long period, you bet
we tried to 'do right from the beginning' , because there is a fortune to
save if you can get rid of all obstacles. But even this giant with billions
in resources stumbled sometimes on the line. I've participated in company
meetings with up to 100 specialists in order to solve a mystery and get the
machines to run again.

' Perfect soldering, whether by hand or machine, is not difficult.' Wonder
what planet he lives on ?

The author of the upsetting article is probably a hardworking and loyal guy,
like most of us, but like the reality I pointed at above, he is not perfect
either.
