The ESD Association Packaging standard is ANSI/ESD S541 and ANSI/ESD S20.20
requires that packaging be per ANSI/ESD S541.

"ESD protective packaging shall be in accordance with the contract, purchase
order, drawing or other documentation. When not specified by the above
documentation, the organization shall define ESD protective packaging
requirements, both inside and outside the EPA per ANSI/ESD S541." [ANSI/ESD
S20.20-2007 section 8.4]

Per ANSI/ESD S541 section 6.2 Outside an EPA "Transportation of sensitive
products outside of an EPA shall require packaging that provides:
1. Low charge generation.
2. Dissipative or conductive materials for intimate contact.
3. A structure that provides electrostatic discharge shielding."

Thank you all for your response. I wanted confirmation on my belief, it
sounds like I'm on the same page as everyone else. Doesn't look like I'm
missing anything thanks for the ammunition.

This is poor practice, although you will hear many opinions. EDS specs
require ESD sensitive devices are packaged and labeled to both prevent
damage and load for future discharge. When transporting these devices into
and ED safe zone you are putting at risk other devices in the area. Most
will argue the P&P equipment discharge and potentials but this is far from
the only concern.

Reels/Tape should be packaged in ESD and sealed in SS bags. Only opened in
ESD safe environment for review and use.

Subject: [TN] Tape & Reel ESD packaging

I have a question regarding packaging ESD sensitive components that are on
Tape & Reel. Shouldn't all ESD labeled devices be kept in a ESD bag when
shipped to a customer or EMS provider?

Currently the Reels are not placed in an ESD bag and are being sent in a
standard cardboard box with several other reels and components.
Some of the material in the box are static generators, plastic and paper and
whatever else you can fit in the box....

This is something I would not allow at my former company but this is a
common practice at my new company. They tell me even the component
suppliers do not ship the parts in ESD bags, when the part has the ESD label
on it.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Scott
