The Question:

This element has an isotope with a half life of 2 days. The element was 
approved for radiopharmaceutical use in the US in 1997. Ores containing 
this element are found in China, Brazil, USA and Sri Lanka. This element 
plays no biological role in the human body although the average amount 
believed to be in the human body is around 50 micrograms. This element is 
still used today in some microwave applications because it retains a 
specific characteristic above 700C. What element is being described?

The Answer:

The element is Samarium (Sm)! Samarium was a key element in the 
introduction of ferromagnetic Rare Earth magnets in the 1970s. SmCo5 is an 
intermetallic compound which outperforms Fe and Al-Ni-Co magnets but is 
significantly more costly. In the 1980s, the Nd2Fe14B intermetallic 
compound was found to outperform the SmCo5 IMC and was much less 
expensive. The NdFeB permanent magnets are now the industry's material of 
choice with sales exceeding $2 billion per year.
