Dave - for week 16 I felt sorry for Clumpy as he de-scaled the wash the
first time he was here, so he helped with reflow profiling.

Subject: [TechNet] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Answer

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question

This element has its widest use in catalytic converters for cars where
its

main function is to reduce NOx gases. This element is also used in
jewelry

and oxidation resistant switch contacts. Which element is being
described?

The Answer:

The element is Rhodium (Rh). Rhodium was discovered in 1803 by William
Wollaston. Automobile catalytic converters contain Pt, Pd and Rh. The Pt

and Pd accomplish the reduction of unburned hydrocarbons and CO in the
exhaust gas while Rh reduces the NOX gases to N2 and O2. There is nearly

five times the amount of Pt and Pd in contrast to Rh in a catalytic
converter. At the optimum temperature of 400-600C, Rh, Pd and Pt convert

approximately 90% of the exhaust pollutants to H2O, O2 and N2. And as
many
folks pointed out, the quantity of these precious metals in a converter
has made them targets for theft.

The winner is Graham Collins of L3 Communications with a whole herd of
folks closely on his heels once everyone re-read the element clues.
Clumpy
and Kloumpios will head for Canada asap.

So far they have:

Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)

Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing

Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- Solderability testing and mowed the lawn

Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel

Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- unknown

Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- unknown

Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys

Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- Cleaned gutters and painted window trim

Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
- unknown

Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits
- unknown

Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs
- descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch!

Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation
- assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit

Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions
- Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg!

Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi
- conducted a plasma pre treatment Taguchi DOE for a sealing process

Week 14 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted with a tin pest investigation/test

Week 15 Bev Christian, RIM
 - assisted Bev shoveling snow

Week 16 David Bealer of Waatchfire Signs
 - unknown

Week 17 Brian Ellis, rumored to be retired
 - assisted with rewiring the house, had a tractor accident and found
his
cousin Kloumpios

Week 18 Denny Fritz, SAIC
 - assisted with tin whisker inspection/examinations

Week 19 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
