The Question

This element has its widest use in catalytic converters for cars where its 

main function is to reduce NOx gases. This element is also used in jewelry 

and oxidation resistant switch contacts. Which element is being described?

The Answer:

The element is Rhodium (Rh). Rhodium was discovered in 1803 by William 
Wollaston. Automobile catalytic converters contain Pt, Pd and Rh. The Pt 
and Pd accomplish the reduction of unburned hydrocarbons and CO in the 
exhaust gas while Rh reduces the NOX gases to N2 and O2. There is nearly 
five times the amount of Pt and Pd in contrast to Rh in a catalytic 
converter. At the optimum temperature of 400-600C, Rh, Pd and Pt convert 
approximately 90% of the exhaust pollutants to H2O, O2 and N2. And as many 
folks pointed out, the quantity of these precious metals in a converter 
has made them targets for theft.
