There are many board support schemes.

1.   For bottom side support there are no components to be concerned about. Long square bars with a blade down the center for the length of that station that corresponds to the height of the Pick&place rail can be used.

2. Other systems use pins that can be placed in the holes of the base plate. The pins be carefully placed in the correct locations when the topside parts are placed to assure the support pin isn't on a bottomside part. A template VA can be used or for high volume assembly a detdicated base plate with support pins can be used.

Another version of the separate support pin has a magnetic base. These are placed in a few choice areas along the panel for bottomside placement or between parts for the topside placement. A precut template can be used where holes larger than the magnetic base show the exact placement for quick set-up.

-  Another scheme was to use the auto-lock system where the pins are slightly spring loaded so each pin rises to contact a flat PCB or plate. Then the air lock system is engaged to lock all the pins to that height.

- Here is another system that just came out.
Center Support
The RED-E-SET Center Support product is an installed center support for pick-and-place machines. The new Center Support provides next-generation automatic board support for center support in pick-and-place machines. Features of the Red-E-Set Center Support include manual or automatic lock, reportedly easy install, and strips can be added as needed. The system supports a range of board widths, as well as lengths up to 24″. Production Solutions Inc., www.production-solutions.com .

What do you call the little supporting things you put under a board to
keep
it from flexing during component placement?
