Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element is one of the least abundant and most expensive on the 
planet. Only 40 tons/year of this element is used but the commercial value 

is $300 million/year. This element is associated with cathode ray tubes. 
What element is being described?

The Answer

The element is Europium (Eu). In the 1950s, the only red phosphors for 
CRTS were ZnCdS:Ag and ZnPO4:Mn which were not ideal for converting high 
energy electrons to red light. In the 1960s, YO:Eu and YVO4:Eu phosphors 
were discovered. The Eu based materials produce a sharp, nearly 
monochromatic red that is just at the right frequency to match the human 
eye's red color receptors. No other material has been discovered yet that 
matches what the Eu based materials can do.


And I thought this was going to be a tough quiz.  The quiz winner is a 
split this week as both Brian Ellis and Tom Carroll sent me the correct 
answer at the same time. So Clumpy has elected to stay in Germany with Tom 
and Kloumpios is heading back to Cyprus to work for Brian (and see his
