And how do you enforce that, through the barrel of a gun?

 Who Is John Galt?

My ideas are:

1. NO R&D labs are allowed to be setup in other countries never mind give them tax credits like they did when Universal Intruments was set up in China to help give away our pick & place technology and software, BGA tecknologies etc..

2. No expenses allowed for travel, lodging flights for Sales, Engineering, Management to support over sea operations or while moving jobs out of the US.

    - These tax expenses would only be allowed in the work to transfer products and jobs back to the United States.

3. The US should do like Russia and buy oil rigs and only allow US ownedoil rigs on federal land and all of the oil and gas stays in the united states.

4. Currently our oil, drilled on federal land gets shipped to the highest bidder and they are not paying 450 million a year in taxes either.

5. No oil and gas gets shipped out of the United States until the gas prices go back to $1,25.

6. No oil and gas speculation buying and selling of our countries natural resources is allowed. These natural resources belong to the American citizens and we should only be paying for the expenses and a flat fee of 20% profit not 2000 or more percent.

7. No American subsidies for companies making a profit!! The subsidy was initiated to get get companies going to create jobs. Once the company is solvent you don't keep getting subsidies and then shaft the American Consumer. Once the company is profitable they should be paying taxes not receiving money from tax payers and then paying gas taxes also.

None of the politicians have talked about these points in the last 15 years. When are they going to wake up?

Government should make laws or corporations pledge/reform themselves

1. Corporations should keep up the salaries of their employees at least with the inflation 2. Layoffs mean no bonuses for anyone 3. Losses mean no bonuses for anyone 4. Every employee (not just the executives) gets bonuses according to their base salaries 5. Base salaries within a company fall on a bell curve with minimum and maximum salary falling within average +/- a predetermined standard deviation.
6. Huge profits shared with schools and infrastructure

I have worked in the US since 1978 including Intel, National and Micron. Though internal and external forces acting on the US economy and jobs are overwhelming but if the corporations care about their employees, they can always come up with ways to retrain and redistribute their work force or work with industry to exchange employees.

A layoff at any age is detrimental not only to a person but can affect the whole family and in some cases the whole community. I have seen divorces and children separated from their parents.

Our political atmosphere is quite toxic. Fear and hate of the word socialism can have any constructive thought for improvement in the job situation and economy annihilated immediately. Some people do not consider capitalism valid if an iota of compassion enters its realm.

I did see Intel coming up with solutions to limit layoffs when I was with them in the 80s and Micron trying to come up with a formula to distribute portions of profits all the way to bottom in the 90s but necessarily much more needs to be done for the people who make these corporations succeed and help fill the pockets of their executives. When corporations try to do that, they see greater success.

So true, John.
I have seen people with 20+ years experience cut.
Today's economy is just beginning to move back to the US, so I don’t' expect a high increase in technical employment for several years yet.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

I got laid off over a year ago even though I was the one bringing in the new technology, developing the new proceses and supporting the manufacturing processes and equipment. Since none of the politicians are talking about changing the laws and tax benefits given to the big corporations that ship our jobs overseas, I don't see any changes that will help anyone to get a good paying job. Good luck if your over 55 and even a healthy athletic 62 year old won't even be considered even though they could because of experience and energy can run circles around the overweight and lazy 30-40 year olds.

Even the government FBI, CIA won't hire anyone over 25. So much for anti-discrimination laws.

Since they can lay you off based on salary, the best workers with great performance reviews are being laid off and the law doesn't protect you.

Subject: [TN] laid off

Well the economy hit home last week. I normally follow, lurk, and occasionally post to Technet from my work address, but got suddenly laid off last week Tuesday after 15 yrs w/the co. - that address now bounces. This was my anonymous log in, if I wanted to post a little more carefully. I will probably sign off for a while. I don't know if I will get back into the electronics area - not a lot of options on the prairies of western Canada, and I really don't want to move right now. Will probably look at some other options like the mining sector, or perhaps the consulting industry, or a couple other options. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for sharing all of your help and knowledge. I learned so much. Genny, aka "Pearl"
