Be aware that this is considered a modification. IPC 7711/7721 covers modifications made to existing circuits. Adding a chip and jumpering it into the circuit is an acceptable modification, but read the document so you are ensured you are making the change correctly.
And by the way, the conductive ink method is no longer acceptable. It was found that the conductive ink is typically silver-filled epoxy, and can easily crack or flake off if the board is flexed or heated. The chip component epoxied to the PWB and jumpered per 7711/7721 is actually much more reliable, hence its use per IPC.

Subject: [TN] Gluing of resistor on the PCB - IPC-A-610 class 3 compliance

Dear Technetters,

Our part supplier sent a notification document stating that the component we are currently using become an obsolete part and it won't be manufactured anymore.

ENG department have to re-design the product by adding an extra resistor component (size 0603 or 0805) glued somewhere on the PCB.
This resistor won't be attached/soldered to any of PCB's pads just to be glued on the solder mask with SMT glue.
Two cables will be soldered to this resistor and correspondent devices.

QUESTION(S)??
Would this modification (gluing a resistor on the soder resist) comply with IPC-A-610 class 3 requirements providing appropriate
ECO instruction will be in place showing how to perform product modification?
ENG need to answer a question regarding environmental condition, I suppose it will be ok.
Product functionality is the same.

Thanks in advance for your opinion....
Andy
