Interesting question, this is an area that is recent huge investment from
private and public sector, "so if you follow the money"....
The biggest difference to SMTa is scale.
The size of the arrays, equivalent to PCB and of the "components" - the
silicon slices are orders of magnitude bigger. You would need a huge
investment if you are in SMTa and box building. The normal business model is
to go to a manufacturer and buy/license their technology and an assembly
line. You would be competing with established suppliers in the Chinese state
whilst observing US regulations.
Closer to SMTa, (and closer still to classic chip and wire hybrid technology
in some respects), would be the control/inverter circuitry. This is also
very similar to that used in other low carbon energy systems, electric
vehicles and so on. It's closer in the sense that you are putting components
on to substrates but you would be handling high power circuitry which is
somewhat of a specialised area.
