Have plenty of tin whisker inspection work for Clumpy and Kloumpios to do at our
Merrillville, IN lab. Who do you think will be better - Clumpy or Kloumpios?
We have an optical scope and the tabletop SEM - optical takes the better coordination,
and the SEM just takes patience to pump down and to vent. Can we take apart the
John Deere electronics and look at those boards? Do you know if the John Deere is
post-2006 and RoHS compliant?

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Answer (very late)
Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer. Sorry for the long
elay as I was out on business travel:
The Question:
This element has low ductility and high reactivity to air resulting in
imited industrial uses. The largest use of this element is in the
lectronics industry in resistors and in hybrid integrated circuits. This
lement is used as a catalyst in the petroleum refining industry.
dditions of this element to Titanium piping result in a significant
orrosion resistance improvement for sour gas oil well applications. What
lement is being described?
The Answer:
The element is Ruthenium (Ru). Ruthenium is a member of the platinum group
etals (PGMs). PGMs are some of the least abundant elements in the Earth's
rust but have a number of unique characteristics. Ru is the least costly
f the PGMs and is used extensively by the electronics industry in
esistors, integrated circuits, Ta capacitors and computer hard disks. The
ussian scientist Karl Ernst Claus discovered Ru in 1844.
he winner of this quiz is Denny Fritz of SAIC. A number of the other PGMs
lements were suggested so many folks were on the right track in their
leuthing. Clumpy and his cousin Kloumpios will fire up their John Deere
ractors and head for Indiana to work for Denny. I saw them putting chains
n the back tires so this weekend's late winter snow storm won't stop them
rom traveling. Kloumpios seemed extremely unhappy about the snow but was
etermined to not let it interfere with their travel.
So far Clumpy and Kloumpios have:
Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)
Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
conducted REACH material testing
Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
Solderability testing and mowed the lawn
Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
had an epic journey of travel
Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
unknown
Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
unknown
Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys
Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
Cleaned gutters and painted window trim
Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
unknown
Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits
unknown
Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs
descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch!
Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation
assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit
Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions
Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg!
Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi
conducted a plasma pre treatment Taguchi DOE for a sealing process
Week 14 Bev Christian, RIM
assisted with a tin pest investigation/test
Week 15 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted Bev shoveling snow
Week 16 David Bealer of Waatchfire Signs
- unknown
Week 17 Brian Ellis, rumored to be retired
- assisted with rewiring the house, had a tractor accident and found his
ousin Kloumpios
Week 18 Denny Fritz, SAIC
- assisted with tin whisker inspection/examinations
