Bob,

I found your presentation very interesting. It sounds like we've
embarked upon a very dark path, and that the manual method might be here
to stay.

We simply don't have the time to babysit another project that's going to
take forever.

Thanks, everyone, for all your great information!

Leland

Hi,

I did a job at a company that installed Agile back around 1999.

My boss told me it cost the $100K, they spend $$$ sending folks to
courses, they had consultants to backup and maintain the system, they
spent $10Ks to hook up to their other data systems, and it made the
design process longer.

We could not insert a single text field into the company data system
because it would make too many changes to their system. The PCB design
group was taking 4 weeks to pull a net list from a schematic. I guess
the PCB design group liked having their own little empire.

When the .COM bust happened I think Agile went in the same direction.
And the little PCB Design Empire went the same direction as the USSR.

What about AGILE? I looked at them a while ago but upper management
couldn't stand the idea of our data being resident off site. Other than
that, I've heard good things about it.

I am currently working on implementation of a Product Lifecycle
Management
(PLM) system, the comments about the required effort and time are
somewhat accurate.

The single biggest hurdle to implementation of these types of systems is
that they usually end up being bolt-on additions to other systems that
lack required PLM functionality. It's commonplace for companies to jump
into ERP solutions without consideration for PLM. Add to the equation
several other afterthought-type systems established to handle issues not
in the scope of a standard ERP system.

Task: a system that ties all of the others together.

There's no "out of the box" solution that exists. The PLM systems I've
been involved with are all add-ons which provide functionality missing
from the corporate ERP system. The best system was Agile PLM on an
existing SAP ERP which was highly customized and took a dedicated
implementation team about
24 months to complete.

A few other PLM offerings:

ARAS (opensource)
Omnify
PDXpert
PDMLynx

Some have supported implementation paths with specific ERP systems, but
all will require customization for your specific needs.

Hth,
Dave
