Doug,
Agree with what Bob said except for one clarification. You cannot use FTIR for determining hydrogen. It only has one stretch and it is symmetric and FTIR cannot detect molecular vibrations where there is no change in dipole. You can detect H2 with Raman spectroscopy because of the change in polarizability. The stretch comes at 4161.13 wave numbers (as per Kazuo Nakamoto, 2nd edition).

Doug,

A high resolution mass spec (magnetic sector) such as DuPont or AEI made can determine hydrogen isotopes, as I recall.

Brucker makes a instrument specifically for H2 analysis http://www.bruker-axs.com/g8_galileo.html

MKS makes RGAs and they have a FTIR Infrared gas analyser that are capable of ppb to ppm sensitivity for multiple gas species including NF3, NH3, H2, NO and N2O and gases with as much as 30% water.

I considered GC with a flame ionization detector. In looking at the method though, it uses hydrogen as a carrier gas. Could you use helium as a carrier gas and still get the same results? And did you use the columns that Agilent lists or did you use a different column resin?

And the follow up question - do you know of independent test labs which could do the GC testing that you describe?

Once upon a time I worked on H2 darkening of optical fibers, and I analyzed
H2 with gas chromatograph.

Good morning all,

I am posting this question for a colleague (not Hillman).

Take a look at this picture which Steve has graciously posted on his web page.

http://stevezeva.homestead.com/Bowed_Electrolytic.jpg

This is an electrolytic capacitor and I don't have any access to the processing history. Presumably it went through reflow. My colleague would like to determine if there is hydrogen in this swelled device and if so, what percentage. There is presumably both liquid and gas inside the swelled area which would complicate any standard residual gas analysis.
Hydrogen is too light for GCMS detection.

OK all you chemists, how would hydrogen presence and concentration be determined here? And do you know of any commercial labs which would perform that service?
