HI
Reverting back to this question, by serendipity this link came up on an
unrelated web search

Subject: Re: [TN] Low Temp Alloys

Hi
Yes Indium maintains its ductility/flexibility in liquid gas/cryogenic
applications and is used extensively for making compression seals and so on.
As a solder it and its alloys (60In/40Pb is a near MP drop in for SN63) are
used in this zone, and have advantages, disadvantages, properties which need
to be considered. Similarly PB also remains fairly ductile.
Joyce's advice is good, the alloys are stable at that temp, everything is.
From my slightly limited experience - not too many people do this stuff and
then in specialist apps - just as in high end apps its not so much the
exposure to extremes that's the problem but cycling to and from.
So I would add that the coefficient of expansion works both ways and your
assembly, not just solder will be close to 150C outside normal documented
behaviour, just down this time not up. That's a big swing.

Indium Corporation of America has experts on cryogenic alloys. Indium metal
is supposed to be the most appropriate.

Hillman and Pauls apparently live in such conditions. Hillman's the metals
man, he'll have an answer?

This could take a lot longer than the Friday Quiz.

BTW - for those who still work in old numbers, that's -321.1F or -196.15C
