Our system is an MVP which we have had for a little more than 18 months, and we are about to get a second MVP we like it so much. I have used the Mrtk, which is good for that type of AOI. I consider the comparator machines level 2 machines, and the algorithm machines level 3 (best). I also work with other systems (Yestech and V.E.) at client companies, but I like the MVP the best. The MVP can easily distinguish between different shades of tan and brown, not sure about red and orange. Another really good system I have used at client companies is the Koh Young, an excellent machine. That one has the capability of discerning any color by converting it to grayscale and digitizing the reflection, so it allows very good alternative color acceptance for multiple vendors of the same value component. The trade-off of using the alternative color selection for unmarked SMT caps and resistors is that you can possibly get a wrong part, but you will at least have the wrong part in the correct orientation and position and make sure it is present. The Koh Young and the MVP are level 3 machines that have a programmable option of stopping to alert you the first time it sees a different color so you can verify it is from a different vendor and not a wrong part, and approving the alternate color option at that time. I can’t remember offhand just how many alternate options for a single component you have with Koh Young and MVP, but it is at least 6, I believe.
With AOI, your ROI increases dramatically if you can think outside of the box and use them for everything they are capable of. For example, at one client company they had an AOI that had excellent dimensional measurement capabilities. I worked with them to set up algorithms for performing AOI of bare PWBs, and it was able to measure various PWB dimensions such as width, length, distance of various features such as edges of exposed pads and selected through-holes from a zero reference, etc. Because of the speed of the AOI, this customer went from a manual sampling basis for receiving inspection of PWBs to a 100% AOI inspection. Their catch rate went way up, and they have not had any “discoveries” of PWB defects for many months. Nothing worse than building up a bunch of CCAs only to find out the PWB is oversized/undersized and does not fit into the cabinet or enclosure.
Another use is to inspect epoxy staking of components, to ensure that:
1. The part is actually epoxied
2. There are no excess or insufficient epoxy deposits (algorithm machine needed for this)
Another use is height measurement, but very few AOI machines are capable of this. The MVP has a precision Z-axis inspection feature which allows us to inspect press-fit pin height and maximum component height to within .001” accuracy, and also to be able to inspect for bent pins. There are lots of other uses for AOI, but use your imagination.

I know the subject is SMT Caps but I figured I'd expand the AOI subject alittle.

I haven't come across an AOI systems that can distinguish between orange and red on PTH resistors.

There may be one out there, but two years ago the vendors couldn't offer one.

For everything else, positioning, orientation, missing, double/stacked parts, they are great.

Which AOI system do you have?
Most newer systems today allow you (automatically) several alternate acceptable programmed images, both in terms of size, marking and color.

Subject: [TN] AOI Inspection of Surface Mount Capacitors

Hi all,

What are the best techniques for inspecting ceramic capcitors with an AOI
system? I have tried by color package, but the color of the packages are not
consistent and I would like to find a better way to inspect the capacitors.

Thanks,

Toby
