George's answer is probably correct.
If we leave the joking side of the question and ask seriously what's
the largest use of cowhide, I guess it may be wallets. At first I thought of
shoes, but hundreds of millions of people do not use leather shoes. And then
I thought of sofas, but I think it's a minority that can afford leather
sofas. Ladie's handbags then? No. Belts? No. But I guess nearly all wallets
are made of skin or leather. Billions of wallets, how many cows are needed
to cover that ?
