Unfortunately, various sites at work are blocked (go figure), but if you
go to www.eham.net there is an extensive amount of reviews on ham
antennas.  I don't remember off-hand what the R8 is rated as,
good/bad/indifferent.  But it might be worth looking at, see the
relative rating, then see if the price fits.

Attics can be hit or miss.  Can't hurt to try.  Mostly, just stay away
from metal.  But you should be able to receive w/o issue.

I've just got some copper wire which  I will stretch along the attice.
Want 
antenna on inside, easier to do experiments. Nothing that disturbes the 
field, I hope. How would a Cushcraft R8 vertical multiband antenna be? 
Advantage: needs little space.
