Hmmmm. Prince of Cedar Rapids. Kinda like the sound of that. What's
next, Duke Hillman? Viscount Adams?

But, how to handle the papparatzi? Ahh well, Cedar Rapids only has two of
them and they can be bought off with some good Iowa smoked pork chops.

Re: [TN] bare board shelf life

Louis - to quote the eloquent Prince Pauls of Cedar Rapids - "it depends"

You have given us storage temperature - thanks.

We can presume you mean the Pittsburgh area, but you need to confirm
humidity - storeroom, sealed desicant bags, etc.

Next, is there a source of sulfur compounds anywhere close to storage -
heaven forbid boards held by rubber bands. Some finishes are much more
sensitive to "microenvironments" than others.

Finally, can you set up a test program - say every 3 months for a year
running some test coupons with each finish against your flux/solder and
J-003 flux/solder for real data within your environment?

Subject: [TN] bare board shelf life

TechNetters, it has been some time since the subject of bare board shelf
ppeared on TechNet. As you probably know, IPC published IPC-1601 in August

010, which discusses printed board storage.
IPC-1601 has some comments on HASL finish, referring to a technical paper
which,
presume, was based on data. It mentions 8-9 month degradation of
solderability
n 'thin' areas of coating, with other areas degrading in 1-2 years. If my
eading is correct, 1601 says the degradation 'plateaus' after these times,

ndicating that solderability deteriorates little after these storage
periods.
t does not say anything like 'solderability will be questionable' or 'it
may be
ifficult to form an acceptable solder joint on boards stored for more than
(X)
onths'.
Information on ENIG and Immersion Silver in 1601 is more limited than that
for
ASL.
I am trying to develop a shelf-life policy for this company to use,
thinking
hat some official policy is better than none.
May I have comments on storage and shelf life of boards finished with
HASL,
NIG, and ImAg? If anyone is interested, our storage area does not have
climate
ontrol. I estimate the minimum temperature is at least a little greater
than 10
, maximum temperature is less than 30 C.
