Unfortunately this happened to a couple of client companies I work for also. They found out the hard way that the connector would not withstand lead-free reflow temps. They switched to a similar connector from a different company. Keep in mind this is an SMT connector, not a through-hole connector. There was a small label on the reel, but not on the outside packaging. The labeling fell far short of J-STD-020 requirements.

Subject: [TN] MSL on Connectors

Dear Technetters,
I am attaching an excerpt of e-Mail conversation between Molex and myself on the subject matter of whether a connector is Moisture sensitive. The connector reel has a "MOISTURE SENSITIVE COMPONENT" stamp, but no other information on the original product packaging.

Has anybody else encountered this situation before?....thoughts/comments??

From Molex:

Good Morning Amol,

Please see the response below from the product manager regarding the moisture sensitivity for Part Number 532610371:

Yes, once the product is out of the packaging, it is moisture sensitive. In order to protect it from moisture, we put the product in the high barrier bag and also put the desiccants into them. Then, it is vacuumed the air and sealed with heat.

I have attached the packaging specification which further describes the packaging requirements for this product.

Regards,

RE: From Amol Kane

Thank you Michelle!.......so, if the part is moisture sensitive, what is the Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) per J-STD-020 and why is that not mentioned on the packaging?

RE: RE: From Molex

Amol,

Unfortunately, Molex does not specify MSLs for our products.

Regards,
