Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element has a FCC crystal structure and is the second most ductile
metal. The liquid form of this element can dissolve atmospheric oxygen.
Over 700,000 kg of this element is used in catalytic oxidation reactions
on a global scale. This element is the by-product of Pb, Zn, Cu and Au
mining processes. What element is being described?

The Answer:

The element is Silver (Ag). Silver has some unique characteristics that
make it an important material for industry. The optical reflectivity of
polished silver is 95% for visible light and 98% for infrared light.
Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of any material at 20C and
its thermal conductivity is the highest of all the metals. Silver oxide is
as conductive as metallic silver making it a key contact material in many
applications. Only gold is more ductile than silver - a 20 kg ingot of
silver can be drawn into a wire long enough to encircle the Earth. Silver
also played a role in the evolution of the dollar. Spain began minting
coinage (pieces of eight - reales) from the huge silver deposits
discovered in Mexico. The silver coins dominated maritime trading and
became known as Spanish dollars. One of the designs contained two
architectural columns representing the pillars of Hercules at Gibraltar.
The pillars were wreathed in an S-shaped swirl of ribbon bearing a Latin
description. The abbreviation for the dollar became two vertical pillars
superimposed on the S-shape of the ribbon which we continue to use today -
$.

Many correct answers but David Bealer of Watchfire Signs was first. Clumpy
will have to pack his cot onto his John Deere mower, leave Bev's lab and
head to David's shop for his next assignment.

So far Clumpy has:

Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)

Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing

Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- Solderability testing and mowed the lawn

Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel

Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- unknown

Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- unknown

Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys

Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- Cleaned gutters and painted window trim

Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
- unknown

Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits
- unknown

Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs
- descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch!

Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation
- assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit

Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions
- Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg!

Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi
- conducted a plasma pre treatment Taguchi DOE for a sealing process

Week 14 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted with a tin pest investigation/test

Week 15 Bev Christian, RIM
