Jack,

Even being under-employed, I am selective on who I accept invites from [and
who I send them to]. I typically limit invites to those which I have had
some dealings with, in some manner. I may not know them on a personal
basis, but have had some form of technical contact/interaction.

When just beginning, I was EXTREMELY selective - limiting to just my
immediate circle of contacts. This is okay. But then I thought why not
expand my horizons a bit and grow a bit more.

Yes, there are some Sales individuals that would seem to like to get into a
person's contact lists, and root around for prospects, but for the most part
one can make a good estimation as to who they might be. Ditto for
head-hunters.

I don't seek quantity of contacts, but integrity/quality.

I attempt to be serious about it. I am not into FaceBook, etc for that
reason.

I view LinkedIn to be more of a 'professional network', the same way that I
view TechNet to be a 'professional forum'

I am still undecided whether this 'networking stuff' actually makes any
significant difference, however.

My recommendation is to be selective

....unless you get an invite from me :-)
