Subject: Re: [TN] In-house training services

Blair:

There are many good providers for soldering training and IPC certification. I won't recommend any specific one but as a former Master IPC Trainer, will provide you will these tidbits of information.

1) Get what you want. If you want or need IPC Certification get that. However if not required much of the IPC programs are reviewing the standards at such a quick pace most details are lost on operator level. Most IPC Certification centers have their own in-house brand of "skills training" no IPC certificate but you know the folks can solder. Ask to see samples and if necessary interview the instructor. Some IPC training companies' instructors simply read the standard to the students during IPC training courses with no value added of why the requirement is in fact a requirement. You need to find that company/person who can make the standards applicable in real down to earth terms to your students. Some instructors like to intimidate their students with all their grand knowledge and the complexity of the standards. You want someone to engage your students at what they are doing on the production floor. I am of the opinion that the folks who make a product know it better than those who design it. The company I am now with does not nor need IPC certification so when I get to training it won't be a formal IPC Course (though I still have my Certified IPC Trainer status for 610, 001 and 7711/7721). So get what you need/want. All the upfront vetting effort will pay off in the end with a good set of classes.

2) Training is expensive in money and time. When you have your students attend class make that they day. They will retain more giving their full attention to the course. Let those who don't get a concept (and if your instructor is willing to do this as I was back in the day) stay late and pay them to really master the subject matter not merely be proficient. Also putting students in a single class from different areas is a good way to create a more homogenous work environment as during the conversations coworkers are enlightened to the commonality between different areas of a company. Generally I would keep skills sets at the same class (e.g. experienced with experienced and in-experienced with in-experienced) as much as I could. However you will find natural teachers on your own staff by watching who helps out their coworkers with the practical labs. Insulate your students while taking the class from regular production duties. Don't allow external interruptions during class. There is always one person who performs some critical function that gets pulled out of class to the point the training becomes a real negative for that person as well as the instructor dealing with interruptions. Also, no cell phones in class.

3) Prior to training inform the students when they will be attending. With proper PR prior and after the classes you can make training a "big deal" and continue that mentality of continual improvement on the production floor after training.

Well, I will get off my soapbox for now. Hope this helps you. Feel free to contact me with any specific questions. Good luck. People are always the most important company asset.

Subject: [TN] In-house training services

Hi 'netters,

I'm looking for recommendations on in-house training services that would
come to Pennsylvania and train our new employees on SMT hand soldering and
rework.

Kindly reply off-line.

Thanks,

Blair
