Here is an interesting video showing falling water generating static electricity. A Kelvin water dropper.

HNY everyone
Normal humidity is made from DI water, that's how it got there, so the use
of DI water shouldn't make any difference, but Steve says it does, so here
is my hypothesis.
The object of the water mister is presumably to generate a stream of
humidified air which would mimic natural humidity.
But the RH won't be changed till the water is in vapour form. Till then you
have dry air with lumps of water passing by.
So could it be that the mister is making a continuing stream of droplets
each one tribocharged. It would therefore be like a charge conveyor belt
(think Van de Graf generator rather than thunderstorm),

Maybe you have to a water evaporator or heater or something?

Not because of the deionized water as much as the water itself...

Space charge collects on water droplets at emission point and due to
movement... Then the chargeable particulate generates current due to a delta
V in potentials...Think thunderstorms...

This may be an off the wall question but here goes.

We have some misting fans that we use for humidification that we've just
recently put in a deionized water source for.

Now it seems that there's a static charge being generated at the fans that
I've never noticed before. Could it be possible that we're generating a
charge at the fans because of the DI water?

Steve
