My wife, Chris Christian, the former Chris Gifford of Indium, once told me she or someone from the Indium Corp of America took a trip to Falconbridge in mid tier Ontario to talk about indium, which Falconbridge was recovering from fume/slag/dust of element X. I had forgotten what element X was, but remembered the rest. It pays to listen to your wife! :)

Outside of work Clumpy and I will go cross-country skiing (In a backpack, I don't have any tiny skis for him.). At work I will give the co-ops a break and have him help with the RoHS testing of components.

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz - the Answer

Hi folks - Here is the Friday Element Quiz Question:

The Question:

The price of this element has increased by a factor of 6 during the last 2

decades of the 20th Century. The majority of the world production of this
element comes from fume/dust/slags from Zinc mining. This element is a
superconductor below 3.37K. This element does not oxidize in room
temperature air. Which element is being described?

The Answer:

The element is Indium (In)! Indium was discovered in 1863 by Reich and
Richter. Reich, a colorblind spectroscopist, had Richter assist with color
determinations and they found a intense blue spectral line from the
analysis of a mineral which they expected to see a green spectral line.
They named the element after its indigo blue characteristic spectral line.
Early applications of Indium were for dental alloys and engine bearings.
Modern applications include solder alloys, neutron absorbing control rods
for nuclear reactors and as a corrosion inhibitor in alkaline dry cell
batteries.

I must be giving the right number of clues as we had lots of good guesses
but also lots of confusion (gallium and indium share a number of
similarities which sent folks down the wrong path). The winner of the quiz
is again Bev Christian from RIM so Clumpy is going to stay in Canada
another week (Bev, you better give him a cot in the lab).

So far Clumpy has:

Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)

Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing

Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- Solderability testing and mowed the lawn

Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel

Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- unknown

Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- unknown

Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys

Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- Cleaned gutters and painted window trim

Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
- unknown

Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits
- unknown

Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs
- descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch!

Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation
- assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit

Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions
- Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg!

Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi
- conducted a plasma pre treatment Taguchi DOE for a sealing process

Week 14 Bev Christian, RIM
- assisted with a tin pest investigation/test

Week 15 Bev Christian, RIM
 - ???????????????

Hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend.
