Actually the NAVY and the city of Mountain View (& NASA?) are currently
fighting over the clean-up. Moffett was closed during the Clinton
administration & the NAVY has slowly been pulling out. They wanted to
tear it down & go on about their business but for sentinel reasons it
was decided it has historical value. But during the renovation planning
it was discovered the skin is toxic. Now the local government wants the
NAVY to pay the bill to dispose of the toxic skin - liberal cake & eat
it too.
It is a cool landmark though - anyone who has flown in or out of the bay
area, or has driven down 101, has surely seen the blimp hangar, not to
mention the great air shows they had out there.
