Hi folks - Hope everyone had a great holiday, here is the Friday Element
Quiz Question and Answer:
The Question:
This element was used as the power source for the 1970 Soviet Luna 17 and
Luna 21 lunar rover missions. The element isotope heat decay kept the
rovers warm during the cold lunar nights. This element is extremely toxic
- the maximum human body burden is only 6.8x10-12 grams. Which element is
being described?
The Answer:
The element is Polonium (Po). Po-210 generates a tremendous amount of
radioactive decay energy: 1 gram of Po-210 will produce 141 W of power
from its alpha decay. This self heating act of Po makes it very hard to
study. Polonium was discovered in 1898 and named by Marie Curie for her
native country Poland. Po-210 is an almost pure alpha emitter which makes
it a very convenient power supply for spacecraft because heavy shielding
is not needed to produce the ground crews prior to launch.
Lots of folks provided the correct answer but Gebhard Neifer of Delphi was
first so he gets to put Clumpy to work (looks like Clumpy will be making a
trip to Germany):
So far Clumpy has:
Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)
Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing
Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- Solderability testing and mowed the lawn
Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel
Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- unknown
Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- unknown
Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys
Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- Cleaned gutters and painted window trim
Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
- unknown
Week 9 Steve Gregory of RD Circuits
- unknown
Week 10 David Bealer of Watchfire Signs
- descaled the in-line wash machine! Ouch!
Week 11 Dick Krug of Sparton Corporation
- assisted with AS9100 quality management systems requirements audit
Week 12 Steve Creswick of Balanced Enterprise Solutions
- Acted as Steve's "go fer" due to a broken leg!
Week 13 Gebhard Neifer, Delphi
- ??? owes us a description
Have a good weekend.
