Hi Genny,

OSP older than 6 months is likely to show solderability issues, so the fact you have got 2 years is impressive.

Stripping the old OSP is simply a case of immersing the boards into 1 Sulphiric solution, and rinsing/drying well. It's unlikely to affect the Gold plating finish if it's been applied properly in the first place. New OSP coating can then be applied, also over the Gold plating.

However...if the boards are too small, then the original supplier may have issues with being able to process them, especially if they have conveyorised equipment. Best to call the supplier and see if they can process.

Good luck
Colin

It seems to me that I have heard people say you can attempt to
rework/reclaim OSP finish boards that may have degraded?  Strip the
coating and the copper oxidation, and re-apply OSP?
We have a large stock of a PCBs with OSP finish that we were left with
when an OEM contract got severely reduced.  We have been whittling away
at the stock for the reduced orders, but now it is over 2 years old, and
we are starting to see problems with solderability.
Would you go back to the original manufacturer for the rework process,
or would you go to some specialty house for this?
A wrinkle, possibly is that there are areas of selective gold plating as
well on the board.

Genny
