Rick, in previous salt mines, we only did one BOM for both. At Nielsen,
after years of working with many CM's domestic and offshore, in all
tiers, we've never been asked for a two level BOM. It's something the
various CM's engineering staff determines. I suggest you structure in
the manner preferred by your manufacturing floor, whether it's in house
or outside.

Subject: [TN] Separate BOM's for Same Assembly

Hi Folks,

Engineering currently produces two separate BOM's for a single board
assembly, 1 for SMD's and the other for PTH parts which are subsequently
entered into the ERP system by Doc Control. Without going into a lot of
detail I understand the reasons for the separate BOM's are related to
production logistics, routings and cost.

I am told this is typical in the industry for OEM's and would like to
either corroborate or debunk this with your responses. I am trying to
determine if the 2 BOM system is necessitated by ERP limitations or the
result of a misguided approach to process development.

Does anyone use the two BOM approach for a single board assembly?

Thanks!

Regards,
Rick
