Remove the particles, not to risk leakage current between pins.
If the insulator is silicon rubber then it's not likely that it's decomposit 
result.
Futhermore, silicon rubber use to be repellant to many debris.
Are the connectors directly from stock or have they been used? Washed?
A EDAX run can decide, or a FTIR ditto.

I  inspected connectors from the Iraq war zones and the whole inside was 
full of desert dust. Your connector seems to be the same, not only the 
(silicon rubber?) water protection gasket.
The micron-sized dust is nearly impossible to stop, creeps in everywhere. 
Costs US mil millions every month.

I was responsible connector specialist for Ericsson once, and I never saw 
something like, except for military parts from the field.
