Chris, Bev, others.
If you are going to be technically correct, adding dish soap to d-limonene does not meet spec.  First, the dish soap is usually ~ 25% active, and second you are introducing water, which is not called for in the spec.

Bev,
This method is indeed a strange animal.  We run it dozens a times a month, as do all of the other indie labs.
It is almost useless, although white paint marker will usually fail.
The term surfactant is so generic that you can make your own brew for 1/2 the cost of shipping.  Get your d-limonene from your local chemical supply and mix it with some dish "soap".
I don't really care if that was the intent or not, because it doesn't matter.
It gets us through our DSCC and ISO-17025 audits.  The hard (and expensive) part is proving that you have traceable 2 megohm water.  We actually buy bottled ASTM type 2 water for this purpose, even though we have running 10-16 megohm.

Bev this test method is very outdated. Ask yourself if you will be required
to use a d-limonene cleaner (defluxer) on your final assemblies?
Many part markings will pass that specific test and then fail when exposed
to your actual wash product.
This part of the IPC standard was generated with input from the days when
d-limonene cleaners were one of a select few alternative to ozone depleting
solvent cleaners. Also it closely parallels the requirements of Mil-Std-202.

Please contact me off-net if you have any further questions.

Charlie

TechNetters,
The IPC test Method, "Chemical Resistance, Marking Paints and Inks" calls
for a "terpene defluxer consisting of a minimum of 90% d-limonene and 10%
surfactant".  One supplier says their minimum order is 3 GALLONS (U.S., I
presume.).  But whether they are U.S. or imperial gallons, I will be dead,
let alone retired before we would use up all this stuff.  Any suggestions at
to what I can buy in a small jar or spray can that meets the IPC requirement
that I can buy?

Bev

PS: Perhaps I am being anal, but shouldn't that read "a minimum of 90%
d-limonene with the remainder being surfactant"?  Using 90% limonene and 10%
makes the use of the word "minimum" superfluous.
