Hi Bob,

Thanks for your feedback. We have now posted a few EDX element maps and images from the system on our web-site. For those who are interested please see following link..

http://www.themcsgroup.co.uk/Gallery/ please be sure to click for the larger image to see in correct aspect ratio.

We plan to post a selection with output from interesting / relevant samples which we hope will be interesting / informative.
Be grateful for your feedback and would welcome suggestions for targets!

Kind regards,

Stewart

Hi Stewart,

80 mm2! That is LARGE all right. My goodness!! Please do share this with the TN community. I'm sure it would be of great value.

I thought the pulse pair resolution decreased with increasing detector size so even thought you could get a higher count rate, you had to make a tradeoff. I was at Kevex in 1973. Rolf Woldseth was the senior scientist and Ed Woo designed the detectors (Ed had been at LLNL).

Hi Bob,

We're just getting to grips with this new tool, and learning to get the best from it, but already we've found it to be hugely helpful. The option which we chose was an 80mm2 "X-Max" SDD from Oxford Instruments coupled with their INCA system. By large format, I'm referring to the size of the detector. Our old system had a 10mm2 detector which was (and still is) common. The key advantages of the 80mm2 detector and the new pulse processing hardware are huge increase in the count rates which the system can deal with. Net result is that we can produce information-rich maps in much shorter time than we used to. Also, we can work at much smaller spot sizes which produces much fewer counts, but since our detector active area is so much bigger than before, we can still gather plenty for good mapping in fairly short timescales.

I believe that this kind of system will retro-fit to many SEM's, old and new.

We have some sample maps on our web-site and plan to upload a wide selection as we go. Would it be too commercial for me to provide a link for the TN community to look at?

Kind regards,

Stewart

Stewart - I'd love to see some pictures! I was, once upon a time, a field engineer for Kevex (now part of Fisher Thermo Electron) who made EDX equipment. How large is the Si detector; what do you mean by "large format"? What are it's advantages and can it be fit to older SEMs? Who makes it?

Hi Inge,

I'm one of the (mostly silent) TN members who enjoys keeping up to date with interesting issues and learning from the many and varied responses.
We run a materials failure analysis and testing company in the UK and find industry led discussion interesting and educational. We respond when we feel that we can add to the discussion assuming the points have not already been made!
I keep a particular eye-out for your SEM+EDX discussions as we run a similar machine to your own and have recently installed a new large format EDX detector which produces some stunning maps. Maybe we could exchange some micrographs / maps etc and share with technet for interest and education?

Anyhow, although not responding on a regular weekly basis, I am certainly active in keeping up wth TN posts and intend to do so going forward....

Kind regards,

Stewart

It's not a heavy burden. Instead it's very amusing to play with these pics.
I've had a lot of fun myself. But it seemed to me as the interest was declining, which I thought might be because of lack of interest.

Now, I wonder how many TNs are active and reading regularly? Out of approximately 900, only a dozen respond weekly. It would be very interesting to make a survey. You could just ask the members to send a 'YES' o 'NO' on the question ' do you regularly open TN and take part of the conversation?
They could send it to the one with authority, and he can then tell us what the percentage was.
I don't have the right to do anything such, but maybe Keach Sasamori.

Inge

Inge,

I have been absent from Technet a long time so I only recently have been receiving the benefit of your efforts.

I can only imagine how hard it is to come up with good clean photos of obscure items as you have been doing.

Maybe monthly......might be a better idea.

Either way, it is appreciated.

Phil

Ditto, Inge. I really do appreciate the time you took to share all of the images, etc. But I also understand that this can be somewhat of a task to do every week, every Friday.
However, should you be able or want to post them every once in a while, it is enjoyed.
Thanks,
dean

Inge,

It is appreciated on my part. What has happened to me is the work load has ramped up dramatically. I have had almost no time at my desk and little time to study the images.

Even when I can't actively participate I still enjoy watching for the final answers.

But all of us have to acknowledge the creative effort that you put in to

exercising our brain cells. If a rest from this work is needed take one. I have enjoyed the quiz and learned much from your contributions to Tech Net.

It was the Rosetta stone (Key to hieroglyphs according to my memory) and

the Remington Manual Typewriter that I called out wrong.

Thank You!

Drew
