Joyce and Richard,

Even though we have our upper thresholds set at 500 PPM, we consistently
run these specific lines between 35 and 70 PPM. The most capable (and
newest) reflow ovens we have are producing the problem product.

Which only adds to the mystery...

However, he need to preserve what ever the OSP left in the hole and
prevent the oxidation prior to hit the wave. The 100ppm or less for the
SMT 2x is important if it is not criticle. What ever it is, the 500ppm
is the down fall for sure.

Agree. However Leland was talking about the reflow ovens, not the wave
solder, which led to my posting. I agree however that Nitrogen levels
don't do a lot for a turbulent wave.

For SMT under around 100ppm gives sometimes gives great results, but
haven't seen the less than the 500 ppm grive radical improvement in wave
solder because of the turbulence of the wave and activity of the flux...

Oxygen levels should be less than 75 ppm, else don't bother.

Joyce,

We have nitrogen in the reflow ovens with max O2 levels of 500 ppm. Our
facility humidity is controlled and within a range of 35 to 45%.

We also have nitrogen pumping at the wave bath.

Not nitrogen reflow prior to wave? How many times SMT before wave? What
is the humidity contorl on the floor?

Techies,

We have one assembly that sporadically experiences insufficient solder
fill of plated through holes at the wave soldering process.

If we cross section one of these, what testing equipment is best suited
to detect the presence of oxidation on the PTH walls? What would be
considered an unacceptable level that would prevent 100% climb?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Leland
