Hi folks - here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element is considered to be one of the most abundant elements on
earth. This element was not produced in a reasonably pure form until
1751
and production did not attain 1000 tons/year until the 19th century. The
element is ferromagnetic at 20C. This element is an essential
micronutrient in humans with an estimated daily requirement of 100
ug/day.
What element is this?

The Answer:

The element is nickel! One of the world's largest nickel deposits is in
Ontario Canada and was the result of a 10 km diameter asteroid impacting
the earth at 30 km/second resulting in an upwelling of the earth's core.
The Sudbury basin was discovered in 1883 as part of the Canadian Pacific
Railway project. Early European miners considered NiAs ores a
disappointment as they were looking for copper but yielded toxic As2O3
vapor when smelted. The name nickel originates from the German
kupfernickel - false copper.

Wow, lots of folks with both right and wrong answers. There are 3 elements
that are ferromagnetic at 20c - Fe, Co, and Ni - which tripped up some
folks. The quiz winner this week is Bill Noel from ITT Geospatial Systems
Division so it looks like Clumpy headed up to Rochester, New York to work
for the week:

So far Clumpy has:

Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)

Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing

Week 3 Drew Meyer, Benchmark Electronics Inc.
- Solderability testing and mowed the lawn

Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel

Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- ???? Gary owes us a description

Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- ???? Fredrick owes us a description

Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- Was a tackling dummy for Dallas Cowboys

Week 7 Graham Collins, L3 Communications
- Cleaned gutters and painted window trim

Week 8 Bill Noel, ITT Geospatial Systems Division
- ??????????????

Everyone have a great weekend.
