Hi folks - here is the Friday Element Answer. Sorry for the late posting,
I was conducting leadfree ballistics testing of North American waterfowl
(aka Iowa's duck season opened this last weekend):

The Question:

This element has been known since the 5th century B.C. and is believed to
be first produced as a metal in 1250 A.D. This element is sometimes added
to Pb plates as a strengthening addition. This element is typically a
by-product from copper, lead and zinc ores rather than being mined for the

sole purpose of its own recovery. This element was used at one time for
the control of boll weevil damage in cotton crops in Mexico and the United

States until prohibited due to toxicity/environmental issues. What element

am I?

The Answer:

The element is Arsenic - As! Over 97% of all Arsenic used is in its
nonmetallic form. Arsenic was used extensively as a wood preservative to
impart long term decay resistance in exposed or buried structures.
Arsenic, usually in the form of chromated copper arsenate or ammonium
copper arsenate, poisoned microbes and fungi attempting to eat the wood.
Due to toxicity issues, the use of Arsenic as a wood preservative in the
US ended in 2003 and other regions of the globe.

The winner of this week's quiz is David Nelson of Raytheon with Fredrick
Miller and Ian Fox running a very close second.

So far Clumpy has:

Week 1 Lamar Young, SCS Coatings
- accomplished nothing (drank lots of coffee)

Week 2 Bev Christian, RIM
- conducted REACH material testing

Week 3 Drew Meyer, Bench
- Solderability testing and mowing the lawn

Week 4 Ian Fox, Goodrich
- had an epic journey of travel

Week 4 Gary Ferrari, Garrick Global
- ???? Gary owes us a description

Week 5 Fredrick Miller, Astrolab
- ???? Fredrick owes us a description

Week 6 David Nelson, Raytheon
- ???? David owes us a description
