The PTH size sometimes plays a role in the analysis, DOE. Always select the largest size hole on the sample in question.

I see, you didn't say you had done it for XRF. It may work as long as your XRF has small enough collimator to "fit" in the remaining area of the PTH

The dry section is conducted to more than three fourth the diameter of the barrel, enough so the XRF beam is not attenuated. The plated barrel wall is pristine.

It doesn't matter "dry" or "wet". Au is soft and always smears unless it's directionally polished

I've done a dry section of the PTH and measure the remaining barrel wall.

Section will do it. Keep in mind though, that the board would have to be overplated with another layer of E-Ni to prevent Au smearing during polishing.

Subject: [TN] How to measure thickness of ENIG plating inside the via barrel

Hi

IPC-4552 calls for XRF to measure ENIG plating thickness. But, this method can only be applied to surface pads. How can we assess the quality of the plating in via barrel ? (poor plating would compromise mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion)

Thanks for your insight

Fabien
