Years ago I worked with Garland and designed the ruggedised cleaning basket which greatly extends their life and reduces welding repair. These have replaced the standard cleaning baskets that had to be scrapped due to the extensive damage.
Over the last 10+ years we have never had to scrap any of the new rugged cleaning baskets.
1. The four corners have the added welded rod welded between the bottom and top frames. Now the corners aren't damaged from poor handling.
2. The covers now have a center rod to prevent the welds breaking when operators stack baskets on top of each other causing the weight to ruin the covers and breaking the welds of the wire mesh on the frame .
3. I also designed the ESD safe carbon/nitril cleaning mat about 20+ years ago. I'll attach the pictures.
I do not sell the mats so this is strickly technical information. These mats have been seliing worldwide ever since.
The standard mat measures 18"x18", but there are extended mats now of about 22" x 18". The matrix of the rubber-like weave is on 3/4" centers to match the cleaning basket to virtually eliminate any reduction of the cleaning sprays. The nitril/carbon matrix is tappered at the top like a triangle to have minimum contact with the circuit board. The flat side is faced down on the coveyor belt or basket. The weave has extra material at the crosses for extra strength. The nitril is what is used in gaskets so it is not damaged by the fluxes and provides a soft pliable surface. The carbon mixture provides an ESD safe material. The mats are used to line the bottom of the cleaning basket and for small circuit cards a mat can be placed on top to prevent the boards from moving around. Component damage is eliminated and cleaning is maximized by preventing boards from climbing over each other which blocks the cleaning sprays from getting under the parts.

Another huge benefit is that on larger, longer yet boards of at least 4" wide can be safely cleaned without a cleanig basket if they are loaded lengthwise into the cleaner. The nitril (rubber like) material prevents scratches and SMT components from being knocked off, by operators, who tend to slide the boards across the wire cleaning belt as they unload the boards. You can carry a handfull of cleaning mats easily, versus dealing with a lot of cleaning baskets.
- The cost of a good rugged cleaning basket is about $200 where a cleaning mat is $45.
- The cleaning process efficiency is greatly increased and repair dropped in every company that purchased these cleaning mats.
I also designed a third product for cleaning large midplain/backplains circuit assemblies with connectors with long gold guide pins. The cleaning frame prevents the guide pins from getting caught and bent in the aqueous cleaner.

I have used several manufacturers for baskets- Stone Mountain Tool in Georgia, AGI in Huntsville, Garland Service in Texas. We normally use stainless steel perforated sheets (about 63% open area) with metal lids and use mats in the bottom to prevent boards from skidding around. And yes the metal dividers are good if you're washing more than one board in a basket. Had washes with top holddown belts but still would use a basket with a lid for several reason I can discuss offline. If you want I can provide contacts off line.
