That is correct. Survey Monkey is a reputable supplier, which IPC uses regularly. I asked Survey Monkey if they could guarantee that our members would never receive spam as a result of taking one of our surveys. Within one hour, I received this response:

"We can assure you that the SPAM did not originate from SurveyMonkey. We don't use or sell any advertising to third parties. It is possible that the respondent had a second browser window open in the background which may have triggered SPAM.

Nonetheless, we do not tolerate spam that either originates from our servers or spam that includes a link to SurveyMonkey. To review our spam policy, click on the Anti-Spam Policy link in the footer of the main SurveyMonkey site. (http://www.surveymonkey.com/Monkey_NoSpam.aspx)"

I think we can trust Survey Monkey, but we should beware of disreputable or unknown survey sponsors using Survey Monday or any survey service. I hope that puts this issue to bed.

My understanding is that Survey Monkey is a well established, legitimate
business. They have accreditations, and an appropriate privacy policy:
http://www.surveymonkey.net/privacypolicy.aspx
There are other similar service providers, but they seem one of the most
successful.

A quick web search doesn't throw up any links to complaints against them
in the wider community.

However, it is possible for companies to use Survey Monkey to gather
information and then use/abuse it. Blaming the survey service provider
for this is like blaming the Post Office for all the unwanted catalogs
you get in the mail.

We are starting to use their service. If we come up with any instances
of misbehaviour like those reported here, I'll let you know.

Regards,
Peter

I did not have enough time to expand on my caution note about
surveymonkey.com yesterday. Here is what happened to me.
I answered a survey from them, the topic is forgotten. The next day I
found about 10 spams from companies trying to sell me a large variety of
online products. The second day, there were about 40-50 spams, including
three or four from surveymonkey urging me to participate in other
surveys and get paid for it. The third day I had more than a hundred
spams from many different companies, everything from auto insurance to
Viagra. Then I started getting 4 or 5 emails from surveymonkey urging me
to SPONSOR surveys through them, and telling me I could make millions
depending on the number of surveys I sent out and the number of people
responding.
Finally, it was so bad I had to close my email address and open a new
one. I later heard other people discussing this and found out the same
thing happened to them.

Interesting,
I answered the survey yesterday. This morning I got a request from
Survey Monkey to answer another survey. It may be a coincidence, but I
have not received this kind of message before.

Thank you so much! That clears that up I have never had a problem with
Survey Monkey. You have a genuine think tank going on here, it is so
impressive to see this much innovation going on in cyber space. It
gives me faith in our ability as a humanity to work together.

Additionally I have learned a lot working with your crew. Most of all, I
have gotten my own UMUC (University of Maryland, University College)
email address, I never realized how important that was with survey
research! I think your team has more to say about efficient supply
chains than they realize, sometimes its intuitive. Supply chain
efficiency is not necessary something that's in a textbook, its
effective communication in real time.
This is
something that your cyber team has learned, that cannot be achieved
through any manufacturing procedure implemented. Watching so many
people work with through common problems with uncommon agility is
entirely empirically fascinating. Again people are the main reason for a
systems success, and never the reason for a systems failure.

In any case, if you have not, I would ask you to take my survey if you
wish, and again, I thank all of you for your feedback. There IS a 500
dollar cash prize and I am shutting my data collection down at the end
of the month so I cannot yet say what the definite odds are. I CAN say
its less than one in 300, probably closer to 1 on 100.

Sincerely and warmest regards,
Sincerely and Respectfully,

Yes, IPC uses Survey Monkey quite a lot. I've used it for 15 or 20
projects over the past three years or so, with no problems.
