Chris,

Check the UL cards of solder Mask manufacturers. As I recall, all colors have to be qualified to UL vertical burn - and I think vendors all want the V-0 rating. I know that is not a full SM-840, but one significant part.

Subject: Re: [TN] NTC - green solder mask - IS NOT "GREEN"?

Occasionally we hear non-green mask blamed for all sorts of malady. The latest
as a wifi antenna that only "passed" (what, I don't know) with green mask.
s there any truth to this stuff?
o the manufacturers ever SM-840 qualify non-green?
Chris

All - We need a current description of the pigment in green solder mask. If it
s still copper phthocycanine green, it is not "GREEN"!! That pigment is
ighly chlorinated blue copper phthalocycanine. That is one reason that the
apanese used a blue colored label in the past to signify "eco-friendly".
aybe we need to all specify clear or blue mask to be more "GREEN". I chuckle
hat the environmental lobby wants us to be more "GREEN", but we have to show
hat by using the color blue. In the early 1970's, my second job at DuPont was
aking very stable blue and green copper phthalocyanine pigments.

ubject: Re: [TN] NTC - Re: [TN] Is green solder mask the default by any IPC
tandard or is it default by common usage?

hen we switch many (but not all) of our boards to RoHS, we specified red
sk to make it very obvious to manufacturing, field service, and repair depot
at it was a lead free only board, as opposed to the good old green. Any
velopment or pre production boards are known company wide to be any
lor except red or green. Clear is preferred, to see the traces up to the
arest plane layer.
o now we've closed our captive plant, the offshore CM wants all green, all
e time, because red might add a few pennies to the board cost.
