If your not a manufacturing shop then you probably aren't looking for bar solder for a solder pot of any kind.
If your request was for the solder spec., as written in your E-mail and no mention or flux, then they are quoting bar solder which comes in 2+lb bars and about 20-30lbs boxes.
You can definitely buy a roll of core solder ffor a handsolder operation. Here are some of the many suppliers: from Contact East, Marshal, The WaveRoom Plus, EIS, etc.
You just have to specify the flux type for the core, OA (need to wash), No Clean (leaves a residue) and then the agressiveness of the flux depending on your application. Then you can hand solder your school project boards.

We are not a manufacturing house and are looking for small amount of SAC
95.5-3.5-1 for evaluation. We are receiving $1,000+ quotes for a minimum
order of a kilogram while we do not need that much. Usually we can get free
samples for evaluation but this one is proving to be a tough one. Any
suggestions?
