Copyright infringement on Technet! Watch your back Doug. Just kidding.

But hey, since the question came from Singapore, it may be a reasonable time to point out that IPC sometimes uses the words defect, conformance, and compliance in a manner inconsistent with current international style.

In the world of Conformance Assessment (which in some cases is nationally or internationally regulated) :

*Inanimate things (including services or their output, for instance reports) can be CONFORMANT
*Humans (or maybe something that takes their place, like a robot or software) and their actions (human + policy/procedure) can be COMPLIANT
*To the chagrin of the assembly community, DEFECT loosely equals subpar or undesirable, but in no way implies nonconformant
*Conformance and compliance are the requirements of acceptable performance against a contract, and in our case, acceptability of hardware

To give a topical example: users of Automated Optical Repair of inner layers may produce VERY conformant product, but might be non-compliant with their customer's rework policy.

So, one can see from the definitions below, sometimes IPC uses them "correctly" and sometimes not.

This subject was breached at the IPC-6012 Tiger meeting. As the 6010 series uses the terms consistently with the international style (as far as we know), we decided there was no further action needed.

IPC sure isn't alone, from my experience, contract law attorneys use the words differently or interchangeably. I've seen them turn their conformance assessment decoder rings on and off.

Revision H lists it as:

Repair: The act of restoring the functional capacity of a defective
article. In common usage, repair may restore the hardware to compliance
with applicable drawing or specifications. In stingent [military] usage,
rework is in compliance whereas repair restores functionality without
being in compliance.

Rework: The act of reprocessing noncomplying articles, through the use of
original or alternate equivalent processing, in a manner that assures
compliance of the article with applicable drawings or specifications.

[TN] IPC-T-50 Terms and Definition

Hello,

Can some one share what IPC-T-50 Terms and Definition states for :

1) Repair
2) Rework

Appreciate your help as my copy of T-50 is rev F and it did not give much
definition.

Thanks and Regards,
~ Wee Mei ~
