Richard,

Back in March, when the unexplained acceleration issue was on every newscast, we bought a 2009 Engine Controller for a Toyota Corrola from E-Bay. We could not get one from dealers or from junkyards, and at first we thought there was a giant news clampdown from Toyota. However, we found that all electronics modules from newer car models are pulled out and re-tested to go back into stock (GM, Ford, Honda, all do the same. ). We were looking for tin whiskers on the ECM at the SAIC Merrillville IN lab.

We found on the 2009 EC module that Toyota was still using eutectic solder, and the board was heavily conformal coated. No whiskers possible!! The board was watermarked "Hitachi", so probably made in Singapore or China. We could not tell the assembler. But, another article this week about this recall says Delphi/Delco is involved. I know Delphi has used Hitachi for boards for many years, so we may have gotten one of these recall boards. I sent our module on to Chris Mahanna at Robisan, as he wanted to look for another possilbe defect. Maybe Chris can look for a varistor on the board and see if there are "starter" cracks.

Of course, the recall is for specific engine/body style Corollas, so maybe we didn't get a recall board.

Contact me off line if you are interested in any of the other details/pictures from the Toyota model, or the "whiskers on commercial electronics" activities we have going on at SAIC, Merrillville.

More Toyota troubles, this time because of a solder joint.
