Dave, at Nielsen, we've always built using numerous CM's, both domestic
and offshore. We've done this since the early 70's and to date have
never placed a bad product into one of our co-operators homes. The data
we collect is what's used to produce the Nielsen TV ratings, in the USA
and many other countries.

Originally, we wrote our own workmanship standards because of the
non-traditional application of otherwise industry standard processes,
but in recent years have replaced all of them with references to the
appropriate IPC standard. What once was a two inch thick book is now a
leaflet. Any special requirements are handled in the drawing notes or
by special process documents referenced on the drawing or its BOM. We
still reference our Workmanship Standards document number on all
drawings, but except for a few rather generic notes, it's simply a
roadmap to the IPC.

If you want to contact me off line, I'll be happy to send you examples.

Subject: [TN] Contract Manufacture Assembly Notes

I am in the process of reviewing Assembly specifications for a company
that is moving towards turnkey contract manufacture of most products.

There are 2 formats I've seen previous customers use:

1. A single Assembly drawing with all notes and specifications 2. A
company specification which calls out the generic information (IPC, ESD
handling, etc.) combined with and Assembly drawing which contains
product specific items

Looking for feedback from the Technet community ... What method do you
prefer? What do you see the pros/cons of each method? Do you have any
good example specifications to share?

Thanks,
Dave
