Hi Gregg - the biggest difference is how the human body reacts to As and
Sb. Arsenic metal isn't toxic but the human body readily converts As metal
into toxic compounds. Sb doesn't result in a similar type of reaction. And
it was ancient Mediterranean cultures that used Sb in eye makeup
applications (aka Cleopatra) - it most likely is not used in makeup
formulas today.

Re: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz The Answer

If antimony has similar toxicity of arsenic, then why is it used in eye
makeup? And we're worried about lead (Pb) in PCBAs?! Go figure?

Subject: [TN] NTC Friday Element Quiz The Answer

Hi folks - Ok, here is the Friday Element Quiz Answer:

The Question:

This element has been used as a constituent of eye makeup since antiquity.

This element was often referred to as a variety of lead (Pb) and was not
considered a separate element until the 16th century. As a pure metal,
this element has no structural uses but is widely utilized as a
strengthening addition in other alloys. This element, in its high purity
state, is used in the manufacture of III-V semiconducting compounds. China

is the dominant world supplier of this element and world production was
141,000 tons in 2002. What element am I?

The Answer:

I am the element Antimony (Sb). Antimony was often called "old witch
metal" because its use in makeup was said to stem from witchcraft where
painting of your face was said to ward off evil. Antimony has similar
toxicity to Arsenic but is more resistant to oxide formation in air and
aqueous solutions. Pewter - an alloy of tin, copper and 7-20% antimony -
is considered to pose no toxicity hazard because food/beverages do not
leach the Sb from the alloy. Sb2O3 is widely used in combination with
halogen containing polymers to make flame retardant plastics cause
charring reactions rather than the release of volatile gases.

This week's prize for correctly identifying the quiz answer is Lamar Young

(SCS Coatings) with Bev Christian (RIM) second. A number of quiz responses

were Arsenic which is very closely related to Antimony for a number of
characteristics. We'll send Clumpy, the 8th dwarf, to work for Lamar for a

day. Lamar - you'll have to let us know how Clumpy does with his task.

Everyone have a great weekend.
