I was pleased to attend and give a paper at a IEEE History Center symposium at Bletchley Park in 2004 to honor Sir John Fleming's invention of the valve (vacuum tube to you US types) and to make milestone awards for Bletchley and University College London (where Fleming taught and consulted for Marconi Wireless).
I learned that British IEEE volunteers, with the financial and personal enthusiastic support of Prince Charles, from scratch, reconstructed the Colossus, the world's first electronic computer. Prince Charles, as you see in the linked article, was so pleased to honor the engineers - that's something you don't see done here in the US by our leaders. And more's the pity for that.
