Krishnan,
Iodine in itself can't dissolve gold. The solution we used to buy was a proprieatry one, consisting of Potassium Iodide-Iodine. Worked best at +60 Centigrades. Note that thinfilm gold and homogenous gold isn't the same. The later one can not be dissolved readily by the said solution. Time for stripping is dependent on some factors, but let's say approx 1um per minute.

Hi Inge,

I am interested to know more about this non-cyanide gold stripping using Iodine, can you give me more details of the stripper. Is it just Iodine or is it a proprietary iodine based stripper, what temperature does the solution have to be and the how long does it take to strip.

Thanks,
Krishnan

I am gonna have to dig deep on this one, BUT my long distant memory tells me that there is a gold stripper based on Iodine! Key issue may be does it attack Nickel? Lemme dig in here. Or would Iodine be "beyond the RIM"? I, of course, would prefer to give you a stripper which was "nothing but net".

  TechNetters,
is there a way of chemically removing an ENIG gold layer and not attacking the underlying nickel without using cyanide?
