Most of the major distributors have a tool/service you can buy. Also IHS has a service, and Silicon Expert has a service.
We keep a close relationship with the major distributors and they send out notices as they get them as well to any customers they have had for a part. Some send them faster than others. I know which distributor I always get the fastest notices from. However, if you don't order a part for two years from a distributor, you usually drop off their list of customers for that part.
So the non-distributor-related services like IHS or Silicon Expert might be better that way. I also sign up for direct notifications on any manufacturer website that I can. I would prefer to get my announcements directly from Vishay, or On Semi, or TI, etc, rather than waiting for Avnet or Arrow or Future to send it to me.

For the tools, you can usually get a free trial to check the service out. Then you need to decide whether a seat is worth $ xx K a year or not to your company.
Trying to find lifespan data out ahead of time is a little trickier. Mfrs don't always want to divulge their obsolescence plans too far ahead of time. If you know your product has x amount of years of lifespan, though, they will usually tell you if they will cover that lifespan (with a qualifier, of course).
For cross references, the third party tools might be best, since they might cover more manufacturers than any one distributor.

Good luck. A group of us were try to do the last aircraft before hit retirement, due to delay of F35 (almost 8 years now), we all scattered to different directions. Canadian Gov just made purchase of 60 pieces. Well, too late for us. (You need 15 to 25 years to DO an aircraft, design, sustain, after market). Sad.
Dig deep in Gidep, there are a lot info there (no longer involved).

Jeff,

If you buy parts from Digi-key, they will send out an e-mail telling you that a part has become obsolete. We have found them to be accurate about 90% of the time. Occasionally they send a notice if they are dropping a line, telling you that a part is obsolete but it is still available from other distributors.

By the way, have you run into an co-op EE student named Jennifer Smith yet? She's my daughter. Don't be too mean to her. ;>)

My regards,

Subject: [TN] Obsolete Part Cross-reference Resource

To all -

Long term production, 3 or more years with the same product, is a new thing for us. It is presenting us with some new challenges, the latest one is part obsolescence. We are doing small batch assembly (50-1000 units) with each batch being built contract, and lags of several weeks to several months between builds. This makes stocking more parts than needed for the current contracts unproductive and costly. Is there a good service for identifying parts that are/will be obsolete and cross reference to active part numbers?
