Nigel,
I'm certain you are right. I collect clocks and most in the clock and watch
field have heard the horrors of radium. One of several radioactive compounds
that were used widely in the 20th century. The others Yytrium and Thorium
for making mantles. I never have heard whether the workers at certain
operations in the mantle plants had higher cancer rates but have to believe
there is a hazard there or in handling waste by products. All mantles made
today are non-radioactive. They do not burn as bright as radioactive ones. I
also am a lamp nut and collect Aladdin and pressure lamps.
